Hotel Hjärta

For Hotel Hjärta in Södra City in Uppsala, Sweden, Green Box supplies 236 prefabricated bathrooms, where innovative material solutions and an optimised lightweight construction contribute to the project’s ambitious environmental and climate requirements.

A new heart in the city

In the middle of Uppsala’s new Södra City district, a new meeting place will be established featuring a hotel, offices and restaurants. The project will be a central part of the district’s development and will contribute with life, movement and activity in the area.

Hotel Hjärta comprises approximately 20,000 square metres spread over two building structures with 10,600 square metres of hotel and 7,500 square metres of office space. The two buildings will have a common ground floor with entrance and lobby. The hotel will be eight floors high with around 236 hotel rooms, and will be operated by Scandic. Green Box is supplying prefabricated bathrooms for the new hotel.

Built for future environmental requirements

Hjärtat is an ambitious project in which the developer Vasakronan has set ambitious targets for both environmental and climate impact. The building must not only meet today’s requirements, but also be prepared for future standards.

In the project development, there has been a strong focus on reducing the use of concrete and other resource-intensive materials to lower the total carbon footprint of the building.

The project’s environmental and climate focus is also reflected in the choice of prefabricated bathrooms from Green Box. The bathrooms feature a lightweight design that guarantees both high strength and stability. The walls consist of hot-dip galvanised steel cassettes, while the floors are cast with a reduced concrete layer. This combination means that the bathrooms have a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional, heavier alternatives, and can therefore contribute positively to the climate accounts of construction projects.

For this project, the bathroom designs and materials have been optimised to further reduce the climate footprint. The result is a solution that supports the project’s ambitious climate goals without compromising on quality, functionality or durability.

Hotel Hjärta is expected to be ready for occupation in Q2 2028. The building is expected to be environmentally certified to LEED standards, with the aim of achieving platinum – the highest certification level.

According to internal life cycle calculations, a standard Green Box bathroom emits approximately 2.9 kg CO₂/m²/year*.
