What is a prefabricated bathroom?
A prefabricated bathroom is a fully finished, series produced bathroom manufactured under controlled factory conditions and delivered as an assembled pod, ready to be lifted or pushed directly into the shell structure at the construction site.
Green Box produces prefabricated bathrooms in an innovative and lightweight design. The floor consists of a steel frame with a reduced concrete layer, while the walls and ceiling are made of hot-dip galvanised steel cassettes clad with full-format fibre gypsum boards.
The result is robust, lightweight modules that reduce construction time, minimise the need for different types of tradesmen at the construction site and ensure uniform high quality in every single bathroom.
What are the benefits of building with prefabricated bathrooms?
Prefabricated bathrooms are produced in parallel with the shell structure construction. This shortens the construction period and can help reduce overall financing costs and release capital at an earlier stage in the construction project.
At the construction site, you can also save time, money and resources because the bathrooms are delivered prefabricated and ready to be installed. The result is reduced waste of materials, easy coordination of workers and fewer errors in execution.
Can prefabricated bathrooms be used in both new builds and renovations?
Yes, prefabricated bathrooms can be used in both new builds and renovation projects.
- New builds: Prefabricated bathrooms are particularly suitable here. They are delivered as complete modules and typically lifted directly into the building by crane, often early in the construction process, before facades or floor slabs are closed. This ensures a fast and efficient installation, consistent quality, and reduced on-site working time.
- Renovations: Prefabricated bathrooms can also be a solution in renovation projects – especially in large-scale modernizations of apartment blocks, care homes, or similar buildings. In such cases, the modules are often lifted in through the facade, which is temporarily opened or removed. This makes it possible to install bathrooms in existing buildings without having to alter the entire structure.
Do prefabricated bathrooms shorten the construction period?
Yes, prefabricated bathrooms typically shorten the construction period.
This is because prefabricated bathrooms are series produced in the factory concurrently with the construction of the shell structure. When the bathrooms are delivered to the construction site, they are already fully assembled and ready for installation. This means:
- Shorter overall construction time because multiple processes run in parallel.
- Reduced need for resources and coordination of different types of tradesmen at the construction site.
- Faster completion of critical building parts such as bathrooms, which can otherwise be a time-consuming part of a construction project.
This means that the construction project can be completed earlier and that capital is tied up for less time.
Is Green Box certified?
Yes. Green Box prefabricated bathrooms hold several third-party approvals, including TGA (Denmark), RISE (Sweden) and SINTEF (Norway). These certifications confirm that our bathrooms meet the national building regulations and quality standards in each country.
In addition, Green Box is CE-certified in accordance with DS/EN 1090-2. This means our internal quality assurance system (FPC) complies with the international requirements in EN 1090-1, allowing us to supply CE-marked structural steel for all prefabricated bathrooms in execution classes EXC1 and EXC2 and declaration methods 1, 2, 3B and 3A.
With the CE mark, you are guaranteed that every Green Box bathroom is produced in line with European requirements for structural steel – with all processes mapped and controlled, from design and planning to the packaging of the finished unit.
What documentation and quality assurance do I get as a developer?
At Green Box, we quality check all our prefabricated bathrooms several times during production. This ensures a high level of consistency and traceability throughout the production process.
Our quality assurance is registered in a digital system that you can access via a QR code both during production and after delivery. As a developer, you gain access to all quality control procedures, drawing documents and equipment lists for the individual bathroom via our digital quality assurance system.
It provides a full documentation overview and is a valuable help in both operations and maintenance of the bathroom.
How much CO₂ does a prefabricated Green Box bathroom emit?
Each Green Box bathroom is tailored to the individual project, which means that there is not one general LCA figure. The carbon emissions depend on a number of factors, including materials, size and installations.
For reference, a standard bathroom of 6 m² has a calculated emission of approximately 2.9 kg CO₂ per year – equivalent to 869 kg over 50 years, which is the time horizon normally used in life cycle assessments (LCA).
For further information on LCA calculations, contact us at info@greenbox.dk.
How does the transport of Green Box bathrooms affect the climate footprint of a construction project?
Green Box prefabricated bathrooms are produced at our own factory in Denmark. For projects in Denmark and the Nordic region, this often means shorter transport distances compared to solutions manufactured outside Northern Europe. Shorter transport routes can help reduce transport-related CO₂ emissions and thereby contribute positively to the overall climate performance of the project.
In many countries, including across the Nordics, stricter climate requirements are being introduced for the construction industry. These include demands for life cycle assessments (LCA) that also account for emissions from the transport of building materials. Choosing locally produced prefabricated bathrooms can therefore be an advantage when meeting national regulations and sustainability goals.
Can prefabricated bathrooms from Green Box be used in certified buildings?
Yes, Green Box exclusively uses materials approved for use in Nordic Swan Ecolabelled buildings, and our bathrooms can be delivered for use in DGNB-certified projects.
Do I have architectural freedom with a prefabricated bathroom?
Yes. Green Box prefabricated bathrooms are tailored to each individual project. Our production process makes it possible to manufacture batches of bathrooms that are customised in form, finish and installations, for example with large format tiles (slabs) or special layouts, so that they follow project design lines without compromising on budget and construction times.
For example, in Kaktustårnene in Copenhagen, we have delivered 495 bathrooms in a trapezoidal shape, matching the rotating geometry of the buildings and contributing to a distinctive architectural look.
What does a prefabricated bathroom from Green Box weigh?
Due to the innovative lightweight construction, a Green Box bathroom weighs only around 325 kg/m² as standard. The low weight and high stability make it easy to lift the pods into place at the construction site and also make them easy to install.
What is the installation height of Green Box shower pods?
Prefabricated bathrooms from Green Box feature a reduced concrete layer in the floors, which is the only concrete used, allowing for slimmer designs and floor separators in buildings.
The floor design in Green Box prefabricated bathrooms also ensures a low installation height – as low as 95 mm.
How are the bathrooms delivered, and how long can they be kept on site before installation?
Due to their closed steel structure, Green Box bathrooms are protected against weather and penetration of water into the structure.
Before delivery, the entrance to the bathrooms is closed with a hinged wooden board, after which the entire bathroom is packaged in strong shrink film. The shrink film is UV resistant, and, in intact packaging, the bathrooms can therefore be left in the open shell structure in all kinds of weather for up to six months.
We can store your bathrooms in our own large storage facility until you request delivery.
